    Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

    Covering 57,191 acres along the Rio Grande near Socorro, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge harbors thousands of birds that arrive each autumn and stay through winter.     Gila National Forest

    The Silver City Ranger District of the Gila National Forest is comprised of three areas, the Burro Mountain region, the portion just west from Emory Pass of the Black Range and the area surrounding Silver City. These area encompass 402,972 acres of forest used for research, mining, timber harvesting, livestock grazing and recreational activities.

    Caballo Lake State Park is located 16 mi (26 km) south of Truth or Consequences in southern New Mexico. Opportunities for camping, picnicking, fishing and hiking are offered here. In late October, bald and golden eagles arrive to nest in the area.

    Gila Cliff Dwellings

    This is one of the main attractions in the area; the national park is over five hundred acres in size. The cliffs lie on the edge of the Gila Wilderness and because it's in a national park it will be preserved. Over five hundred people visited the dwellings last year. There are no signs of human habitat in the park.

    City of Rocks State Park

    City of Rocks State Park is accessed off State Route 61 in southwestern New Mexico. The park is named after the monolithic rock structures, formed of volcanic ash some 30 million years ago, that are located throughout the landscape. Camping, picnicking and hiking are popular activities here.
